July 1979
  • The "Human Support" Seminars group through Northern Michigan Hospital begin discussing hospice care
July 1981
  • 40 people attend a meeting at the Friendship Center to discuss creation of a formal hospice
  • 80 volunteers are trained as caregivers
November 1981
  • Hospice of Petoskey is formed with first board officers:  Dale La Brie (President), Jim Larsen (VP), Virginia Danville (Secretary) and Amy Barbus (Treasurer)
April 1982
  • All paperwork completed to make Hospice of Petoskey an incorporated entity
July 1982
  • Mary Gruler appointed acting Executive Director
March 1983
  • Hospice of Petoskey gains 501 c 3 designation
  • Cheryl Wilde becomes first paid staff of Hospice of Petoskey
August 1983
  • First patient admitted to the Hospice of Petoskey program
October 1983
  • Fundraising event to benefit hospice held at Boyne Highlands with Queen Elizabeth II cruise raffle as main event
January 1984
  • First office manager and patient care coordinators hired
August 1984
  • Happy first birthday to Hospice of Petoskey!
  • 10th anniversary of hospice care in the United States
September 1984
  • First memorial service organized to honor patients and families
March 1985
  • First grief recovery series offered to the community
September 1985
  • Third annual benefit fund raiser brings in $13,000 to support hospice programs
June 1986
  • First family-volunteer reunion held reuniting hospice volunteers with their "families"
October 1986
  • Hospice receives licensure from the Michigan Department of Public Health
November 1988
  • First "Handling the Holidays" support group offered to the community
July 1989
  • Name changes to Hospice of Little Traverse Bay
November 1989
  • 7th annual benefit auction raises $42,000!
January 1990
  • First Grief Busters program for children introduced
June 1990
  • First benefit dinner held at the Crows Nest restaurant donated by Mike & Linda McElroy – raised $3,000!
October 1991
  • Hospice becomes Medicare certified
April 1994
  • Hospice Foundation of America sponsors first national grief teleconference
July 1996
  • Hospice of Little Traverse Bay becomes an affiliate of the HealthShare Group
January 1999
  • Year round children's grief support program started with support from area foundations and community contributions
November 1999
  • Annual benefit auction raises $130,000!
August 2000
  • Hospice celebrates 17 years of direct patient care, 19 years of providing end of life information to the community
2004
  • Kicked off the Fundraising Campaign for Hiland Cottage
2006
  • HOLTB receives Kresge Challenge Grant
2007
  • Ground Breaking – Hiland Cottage
2008
  • First patients were accepted in Hiland Cottage the first week of August
